“School” Soundtrack on Top

To anyone who ever said the musical was dead, consider this: On the heels of setting cable TV ratings records, Disney Channel’s “High School Musical 2″ just saw its soundtrack post the second-highest sales week of the year.

In its debut week on the charts, the Walt Disney Records release sold 615,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Among 2007 releases, only Linkin Park’s “Minutes to Midnight” has sold more, 623,000. What’s more, “High School Musical 2″ by itself out-sold all the other 9 CDs in the Top Ten. With those kind of numbers, maybe there will be a “High School Musical 3″ after all. (Reports this week indicate that some of the franchise’s stars, including Zac Efron, may want too much money to keep the story going.)
