“Lust,” Blanchett, Pitt Win Venice

“Lust, Caution,” an erotic espionage thriller set in 1940s Shanghai and directed by Ang Lee (”Brokeback Mountain”), won the Golden Lion top prize at the Venice Film Festival, bringing the 64th competition to a close.

“I’m Not There,” a U.S. movie directed by Todd Haynes and inspired by Bob Dylan, and “La Graine et le Mulet,” a French film by Abdellatif Kechiche, shared the Special Jury Prize.

Brian De Palma was voted best director for “Redacted,” which is about the conflict in Iraq. Paul Laverty won the prize for best script for “It’s a Free World” by Ken Loach.

The award for best actor went to Brad Pitt for his performance in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” directed by Andrew Dominik. Cate Blanchett won the best actress prize for her role in Haynes’s “I’m Not There.”
