“Brokeback Mountain” To Be Opera

“Brokeback Mountain” writer Annie Proulx has given the go-ahead to an opera based on her story about two gay cowboys. Fellow Pulitzer Prize winner Charles Wuorinen will compose. My obvious candidates for arias: “I Can’t Quit You,” “You Bet!”, and “Jack, I Swear.” And I suggest that Wuorinen give serious thought to incorporating a few subtle references to Handel’s air “And We, Like Sheep.” As for casting, how about Mariusz Kwiecien (pictured left) as Ennis and Nathan Gunn (pictured right) as Jack? Does the fact that they are both baritones present a “double rooster” problem?
