Gyllenhaal Shooting the Moon

As I reported last week, Jake Gyllenhaal (pictured here shot by Mark Seliger for the October issue of Interview) will not, after all, be coming to Broadway in 2008 in a comedy by Beau Willimon called “Farragut North” — at least not in a production directed by Mike Nichols. And the busier that Gyllenhaal’s movie schedule gets, the more unlikely it is that he will be acting on a Broadway stage anytime soon. Frankly, he would be smart not to do a play without a director of Nichols’s caliber: although Gyllenhaal got some nice notices in London for his role in “This Is Our Youth,” he still needs a strong hand to help him succeed. His film career, meanwhile, keeps on humming, despite the fact that his October release, “Rendition,” is not shaping up to be a hit. Gyllenhaal is about to shoot a love-triangle movie called “Brothers,” with Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman, and Variety has just reported that Gyllenhaal will then do an untitled project with director Doug Liman about lunar colonization.

  1. Are you sure? Jake did an 8(?)-week run in London which earned him the Evening Standard Best Newcomer Award. From what I’ve heard, the West End critics aren’t exactly shy when it comes to criticism. Maybe he does have/has learned what is required to succeed in a challenging role (if “Farragut” is as good as we are led to believe.)
