“Coast of Utopia” Arrives in Moscow

“The Coast of Utopia,” Tom Stoppard‘s three-part, Tony Award-laden play about Russian and European intellectuals in the mid-19th century, has just opened in Moscow, at the Russian National Youth Theatre. Having been the official online blogger for the play when it had its run last season at New York’s Lincoln Center Theatre, I would give anything to see all these Russian characters, led by writer Alexander Herzen (portrayed by the actor Ilya Isayev, pictured here), on a Russian stage. (Here’s an English-language review of the production.) Alas, it looks like I will have to content myself with hearing Stoppard’s report of the Moscow reception when he’s in New York in the next few weeks, for the Broadway opening of his play “Rock ‘n Roll,” starring Rufus Sewell.
