“Old Men” Too Violent for Oscar?

Hollywood buzz is saying that many Oscar voters who’ve already seen the Coen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men” are highly impressed by the film, but are bothered by the very literary ending. I know just as many show-biz types who are bothered by the film’s violence, encapsulated by the chilling performance of Javier Bardem (pictured). Will all the blood and evil of the story prevent it from winning a Best Picture Oscar? Will this be a year when the screenwriting and directing Oscars split, with those awards going to the Coen Brothers but with Best Picture going to a less disturbing picture like “Atonement“? We’ll see. Meanwhile, “No Country” opens this Friday, and here’s the review from Variety.
