The Greatest, Gayest Badass on TV

Even in 2008, a Martian landing on planet Earth could be forgiven for thinking that all gay men were sex-obsessed style experts who moisturized four times a day and dwelled with their equally well-groomed boyfriends in immaculately decorated homes replete with 2.2 golden Labs and wheaten terriers. Television abets the stereotype; when prime time’s latest fashiony show, “How To Look Good Naked,” showcases a gay man advising women on the ins and outs of their au naturel bodies(?!?!?), you might think that the Martian’s blinkered view was going to be irrevocably perpetuated this annum. Thank the gods, then, that “The Wire” returns to HBO this Sunday for its fifth and final season. This series, about the Baltimore’s equally flawed cops and criminals, features Omar, a gun-toting, badass mo-fo who is played by Michael K. Williams (pictured) and who is utterly fearless in his nightly rounds to rob from the drug-lord rich and to give to himself and his Latino boyfriend. Once “The Wire” is played out, I’d be happy to have Omar train his double-barrels on every gay style queen on television. Not to mow them down permanently, just to take them out of commission for a season or two and give us a break from all the primping. While waiting for that fantasy to come true, let’s all read this interview with Williams.
