Diamonds: An Activist’s Best Friend

Readers of this website know what a fan I am of Julie Christie, who can now be considered the front-runner to win the Best Actress Oscar for her shattering performance in “Away from Her.” As you can see from this photo of her, taken at last night’s National Board of Review awards, Christie is still a beauty. But look closely at the picture: if she hasn’t had some work done then this photographer’s camera is truly playing tricks with the viewer. I point this out because Christie used to say in interviews how she’d be very reluctant to go under the knife. She’s also one of those school-of-Vanessa-Redgrave politicos who’s made a sub-career of blasting America’s militarism and consumerism. I guess it’s hard to maintain that consumerist critique when Chopard wants you to wear a spectacular cushion-cut necklace of diamonds (83 carats) and rubies (20 carats).
