Maestro Muti Blows Into Windy City

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra said Monday that it had engaged Riccardo Muti (pictured) as its next music director, luring the charismatic Italian maestro — one of a dwindling band of podium eminences — to the United States and adding a layer of luster to the city’s cultural profile. I can’t say that I’ve ever been a fan of Muti’s, either when he was with the Philadelphia Orchestra or with La Scala in Milan. While his conducting has never been von Karajan tech-obsessed, I do agree with the conventional wisdom that says Muti’s music-making tends to lack warmth.
