Tonys Hit “Heights,” “South,” “August”

Overall, the Tony award nominations, which were announced this morning, offered few surprises. “In the Heights” (whose star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, is pictured) is the favorite to win Best Musical and it got 13 noms. “South Pacific,” the favorite to win Best Revival of a Musical, received 11 noms. And “August: Osage County,” which is about as likely to lose Best Play as Hillary is to win this year’s Democratic presidential nomination, received 7 nominations. The chat-room mavens are already buzzing about the “shocking omissions.” Here are mine: Kevin Kline, who should have been noticed for his panache-filled performance in “Cyrano”; Elizabeth Marvel, for her superb work in Caryl Churchill’s “Top Girls“; and Anika Noni Rose, for her dynamic performance as Maggie in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” It’s interesting that “Cyrano” and “Cat” were the most consistently sold-out plays on Broadway this season and the ones that received the least love from Tony nominators. A little jealousy perhaps?
