The Olympics Opening So Far

I’ve been watching the Olympics opening ceremony this morning (despite the fact that NBC won’t broadcast it until this evening) and the procession of athletes into the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing is quite moving. There have been a few fashion victims, inevitably: the men on the Danish team are wearing capri pants! I guess being a man is still different in Europe than in uptight America. One thought about the media coverage: NBC spent billions to secure the rights to broadcast the games in North America, and as a consequence forced lots of other outlets around the world (like the BBC) to freeze their live Internet coverage in the United States. So: when the Chinese government freezes websites within China it’s “Communist” and bad, but when an American corporation freezes websites in the U.S. it’s “capitalist” and good. Hmm…
