News: Nichols Helping Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim (pictured) told Playbill.com recently that, in addition to preparing the revised version of his musical “Road Show” for the Public Theater in New York this fall, he’s been working on a book. Although he told Playbill that the project was ostensibly about lyric writing, LemonWade has learned that it’s probably as close to a memoir as Sondheim will ever get, because it discusses in detail the process by which he created his many shows. Among the handful of people helping him with the book is the director Mike Nichols, who’s recovering nicely from the heart-bypass surgery he had this summer. I hear that Sondheim doesn’t have a title yet for his book, so let me propose the one that’s obvious but absolutely apt: “Putting Them Together.”
