Is “Slumdog” This Year’s “Juno”?

Last year, “Juno” came roaring out of the Toronto Film Festival to commercial success and Oscar nominations (including a win for screenwriter Diablo Cody). This year, the comedy-that-could slot looks as if it may go to “Slumdog Millionaire.” The movie, which is directed by Danny Boyle (“Trainspotting,” “28 Days Later”) and which got the biggest buzz from the just-concluded Telluride Film Festival, involves a kid (played by Dev Patel, pictured) who finds big trouble and big bucks off the Indian version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.” (Here’s the Variety rave.) It’s Dickens meets 21st-century Mumbai.
