The Latest From Sondheim Land

Michael Cerveris (pictured) has just signed to costar opposite Mary-Louise Parker in the upcoming Broadway revival of “Hedda Gabler.” I have to say I am puzzled, to say the least, about this. Cerveris is currently starring in Stephen Sondheim’s new musical, “Road Show,” at the Public Theater, and the production is scheduled to run through December 28. “Hedda” begins previews January 6. So not only will Cerveris be rehearsing the Ibsen by day while performing the Sondheim by night, but by heading for “Hedda” he essentially makes it impossible for “Road Show” to extend. The first new Sondheim show in New York in more than 14 years and an extension has been scotched before the reviews are even out? Of course, if “Road Show”‘s a hit there’s always the possibility of a Broadway transfer later in 2009.
