The rest of the country may be entirely fixated on the election, but me I’m in deep mourning for the death of Peruvian-born songstress Yma Sumac. It probably says something about the macadamia-nut quotient of my readership that there are some of you who actually know who Sumac is. For the rest, I’ll say merely: she was incomparable. She was otherworldly. She was stupefying. She was also a singer with a range to put Celine to shame. More here, including a video of the classic Anne Bancroft-inspired sketch, “Yma Dream.”
