Her Majesty’s A Pretty Nice Girl

In a speech at the Prince’s Trust today in London, the Queen, looking very chic (except for the hat) and accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, praised Prince Charles’s “vision and conviction.” This back-patting is a run-up to Charles’s 60th birthday, and to a concert the Queen is hosting for him Thursday. Although conductor Riccardo Muti backed out of the concert (not even Her Majesty dictates his program), plenty of other big-name talent will be on hand. Meanwhile, the Guardian has just published a sampling of Charles’s not always politically correct writings. My favorite quip is the one about London architecture: “You have to give this much to the Lutwaffe: when it knocked down our buildings, it didn’t replace them with anything more offensive than rubble.”
