“Dreamgirls” Returns to the Apollo

One of the few quibbles I had with the movie version of “Dreamgirls” was that director/screenwriter Bill Condon transposed the opening sequence from the Apollo Theater in New York, the setting in the 1981 Broadway musical, to the Detroit Theater in Detroit. So it’s only fitting that the major-league stage revival of the show will kick off Stateside next November not in the Motor City but in Gotham — with four weeks at the Apollo. Here’s hoping that Jennifer Hudson, whom we should keep remembering in our thoughts and prayers, will be able to attend the opening night.
