Penn, Roberts To Do Nichols Film

It looks as if Sean Penn (left), whose riveting performance in “Milk” is generating Oscar talk, is going to star in Mike Nichols’ remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 detective thriller “High and Low.” And it looks as if Penn’s costar will be Julia Roberts (right), with whom Nichols worked happily on “Closer” and “Charlie Wilson’s War.” The project, based on a David Mamet script, will be an American homecoming of sorts for the material: the original is based on an Ed McBain novel. Look for Nichols to start shooting in the summer.
