Grrr: An Eartha Kitt-ie Tale

earthakitt3_1903Could there have been an odder duo of deaths than Harold Pinter and Eartha Kitt (pictured)? In honor of Miss K., who passed away today, here’s a story. A few years ago, Eartha showed up at the theatre-crowd eatery Joe Allen’s in New York. The waiter was a cheeky sort, who danced for Martha Graham. The meal ended and the waiter asked if he could bring anything else to Miss Kitt and her friends — all chorus boys, her preferred kind. “Just coffee,” the singer said. “How do you like it?” asked the waiter. “I like my coffee like I like my men,” she purred. “I’m sorry, Miss Kitt,” the waiter replied as he pirouetted away, “but we don’t have gay coffee.”
