SAG Awards: No Surprises

images-71Awards season reached a new level of predictability tonight with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards. “30 Rock,” “Mad Men,” and “John Adams” took the television honors, as they have ever since last fall’s Emmys. “Slumdog Millionaire” took the best-ensemble/film award, and it would take a Truman-in-1948 level of upset for it not to win the Best Picture Oscar. Sean Penn (pictured)) won the Best Actor/Motion Picture award for “Milk,” which increases his chances of Oscar gold, though Mickey Rourke is still in that race, and possibility even Frank Langella as a dark horse. Heath Ledger is the most consistent winner of the season, taking Best Supporting Actor honors, and the only shaky Oscar category remains Best Supporting Actress. Why? Because the SAG winner, Kate Winslet for “The Reader,” will probably win the Oscar for the same performance in the lead category, making the supporting Oscar race a contest between Penelope Cruz and Viola Davis. At SAG, Meryl Streep won the Best Actress/Motion Picture award for “Doubt,” and showed yet again how to give an acceptance speech.
