An Original Broadway Musical?

memphisljprod200Can it be? Am I reading this right? Is a new, non movie-based, non-revival musical coming to Broadway? Does that still happen? I may be exaggerating, but it seems of late that all there is on Broadway anymore are shows like “Shrek,” any of the Disney shows, or the upcoming “Spiderman” fiasco. If not an ultra-hyped movie-based venture, all I seem to see on the glittering marquees of Times Square are revivals. I’ve said to many a friend that Off-Broadway is the new Broadway as far as new material goes. But according to TheatreMania.com, “Memphis,” a new musical about the segregated 1950s South, starring Chad Kimball and Montego Glover (pictured), will open on Broadway this fall. The show is written by Joe DiPietro with music by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan. DiPietro’s currently working on Toxic Avenger, which opens this coming month Off-Broadway. With the collapse of so many shows under the current economic struggle, it my hope that a theatre full of new and exciting material will emerge from the ashes.
