Horton Foote Dies At 92

05foote-480I am extremely sad to learn that playwright and screenwriter Horton Foote (pictured) died today at the age of 92. I had the pleasure of getting to know him last fall, when I worked on the Broadway production of his play “Dividing the Estate.” In his long and productive life, Foote wrote many masterpieces, as well as the screenplay of “To Kill A Mockingbird.” It is so wonderful that his work, which had fallen out of fashion in the 1960s and 1970s, experienced a resurgence beginning in the 1980s; in the decade before his death, it seems, wonderfully, that he could not get a bad review. For me the most fitting tribute the theatre world could give would be to award him a Tony for “Dividing the Estate” this June. But even without that honor, his place in the playwriting pantheon is assured.
