“Slumdog” Slams Past $200 Million

Variety reports:

“Slumdog Millionaire” has crossed the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office, joining an elite group of indie titles to do that kind of business.

Early weekend estimates had “Slumdog” coming in No. 2 at the international B.O. in the wake of its Oscar wins, behind Warner Bros.’ “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”
But more complete returns show “Slumdog” grossing roughly $15 million overseas for the weekend, while “Button” earned $14 million. The foreign rights for “Slumdog” were sold off by Pathe, meaning a patchwork of distribs.

“Slumdog” is enjoying one of the best Oscar bounces on record, grossing $12 million at the domestic box office for the Feb. 27-March 1 weekend and coming in No. 1 on Tuesday in North America.

Pic’s domestic cume through Tuesday was $116.9 million; foreign total is at least $96 million.
