Oscars In March: Bad Idea

220px-academy_award_oscarI understand that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences does not want to conflict with the Winter Olympics next year, but moving the date of the Oscars from February till March (March 7, to be exact) is a bad idea. And it isn’t solved simply by moving the date of the nominations being announced to February 2. The awards derby starts in early December with critics voting, whether the Academy likes it or not. By the time the Oscars roll around, most people, even diehards like me, are a little sick of all the intense campaigning and media coverage. The Oscar broadcast this year increased its ratings a bit; I don’t think a March date will increase them further.
