Audra McDonald (pictured) and Raúl Esparza (pictured) join Anne Hathaway this summer in the Public Theater’s upcoming Shakespeare in the Park production of ”Twelfth Night”, according to Playbill. McDonald will play Olivia and Esparza will tackle Orsino opposite Hathaway’s Viola. The production should be promising. I fell in love with Esparza’s Charlie Fox in “Speed-the-Plow” this winter and have heard nothing but praise of McDonald’s performances in “110 in the Shade” and “Ragtime”. The only question I have, besides whether Hathaway can play Shakespeare as effectively as she can an angsty sister, is whether I can expect anything from the pair of them that addresses their virtuosity in musical theatre. “Twelfth Night: The Musical” anyone? I’m kidding, I think, but I can’t wait to see what these two mercurial actors do.
