Easter Bonnet: Best Show on B’way

Just came from the 2009 Easter Bonnet competition, sponsored by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Once again, it is, along with its sister show, Gypsy of the Year, the most entertaining event on Broadway. This 23rd annual Bonnet edition raised $3,402,147 in six weeks of nightly curtain-call appeals. The number was revealed at today’s performance at the Minskoff Theatre. As for the skits, which are heavy on the in jokes, I was surprised how much Patti LuPone came in for lampooning, especially her infamous call-out-the-audience-member rant at “Gypsy.” I expected more snide remarks about Susan Boyle. Lots of stars showed up — even Liza Minnelli was there.
