Swine Flu: The Musical Version

The world is in the grip of a nervous panic about the possibility of a swine flu pandemic, but in Mexico they are not taking the outbreak quite so seriously. At Spanish Bombs – a Latin tribute to the Clash at the Barbican in London last night – Ruben Albarran, lead singer of rock band Café Tacuba, arrived on stage with a theatrical sneeze. “This is a gift from Mexico,” he said, to some nervous laughter from the largely British audience. Finding dark humor in disaster often makes for the most incisive kind of comedy and, back in Mexico, two groups have produced musical tributes to the gripa del marrano, as it’s known in Spanish.
