Has Green Day Gone Right-Wing?
When Green Day were preparing to release “American Idiot” – the album that went further than any other mainstream release in criticizing the US government, and which went on to sell 12m copies – lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong openly criticized the rightwing media. He singled out Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News Network as the source of his scorn. Then why did the band last week sign a world exclusive deal with Murdoch’s hilariously reactionary Sun newspaper to stream “21st Century Breakdown,” the California trio’s latest album?
I thought they didn’t want to be American Idiots.
