Obama: Arts “Define Who We Are”

In New York to appear at events at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Opera, Mrs. Obama said “The arts are not just a nice thing to have,” she said, adding that the arts “define who we are as a people.” That statement was made in a speech at American Ballet Theatre’s spring gala, at the Met Opera, where she was flanked by Caroline Kennedy, who, like Mrs. Obama and her husband, was an honorary chair of the evening.
