An OBIE For Pig Iron

chekhov1James Sugg (pictured) won an OBIE Award last night for his performance in Pig Iron Theatre Company’s “Chekhov Lizardbrain”. The Philadelphia Company produced the show Off-Broadway in SoHo’s Ohio Theatre to great critical and commercial success in October of last year. Sugg, who played the protagonist, Dmitri, and his alter-ego, Chekhov Lizardbrain, has been with the company for ten years in Philly while performing in many other projects, including a well-received revival of “Assassins“, where he played Charles Guiteau at the Arden Theatre. “Chekhov Lizardbrain” was my favorite piece of theatre that I saw this season. Collaboratively created from Chekhov’s “Three Sisters” and the autistic study of the human brain, the show is magically physically, absurd, and yet deeply heartful and grounded in a delicate understanding of the human condition. Besides a personal fondness for Pig Iron (my best friend is their business manager), I was blown away and delighted by such a collaborative and unique but no less engaging piece of theatre. Congrats!
