Dear Meryl: Boycott The Oscars!

The Oscar race for Best Actress is locked in to a battle between newcomer Carey Mulligan, for “An Education,” and Meryl Streep, for “Julie and Julia.” This awards expert points out that in such contests the statue almost always goes to the newcomer. My take: that’s unfortunate! “An Education” is a well-made but oh-so-smug movie that is pitched perfectly to Americans who are still dumb enough to think if a story is British it’s automatically more sophisticated. I wish Meryl would boycott the Oscars this year; the industry takes her for granted. She’d be dubbed a bad sport by some but so what: she’s Meryl Streep and you’re not. She can do whatever the fuck she wants!
