“Precious” Is Like “Female Trouble”
Whenever I try to persuade people to see “Precious,” one of my very favorite movies of the year, I tell them that it is not only tough and serious but also extremely funny. They look at me as if I’d just farted. How could a movie about a fat black teenager who is raped by her stepfather and abused by her mother be funny? Yet it is, and I’m glad to see that a fellow blogger, Jim Emerson, has brilliantly — brilliantly! — explained the humor. At heart, Emerson argues, “Precious” is a John Waters movie.
