Tough January For Musicals
It’s nice to see that the Broadway revival of “Ragtime” has extended through January 10, a week past its previously announced closing. Meanwhile, “Finian’s Rainbow (leads Kate Baldwin and Cheyenne Jackson are pictured),” which did better with the critics than “Ragtime” but struggled equally at the box office, will shutter on January 17. Some commentators will interpret these exits as a further sign of Broadway’s inability to support quality, but it’s just as much a seasonal symptom: the box office tends to crater in the winter.
