Ofili’s New Show: No Virgins
More than a decade ago, Chris Ofili’s work was part of the “Sensation” show at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Ofili’s contribution, a colorful painting of a black Virgin Mary (pictured), leaning against a wall and supported on little globs of elephant dung, sent religious folk into high dudgeon; Cardinal John O’Connor decided the piece was probably an attack on religion itself. Now Ofili has a new show about to open: no black Virgins this time.
