Rex: The Issue Of Gabby’s Weight
Rex Okpodu wonders: ‘Approaching the final stretch towards the 82nd Academy Awards, some comment ought be made about an Oscar nominee as a role model. I applaud the positive and self-confident poise of Gabourey Sidibe, Best Actress nominee for “Precious,” on the awards circuit: she acknowledges her weight and her happiness with it. I do feel, however, that in the interest of her own health it cannot be right for her to stay so heavy. I am perplexed that not one pundit or journalist has asked her about using her well-deserved status to address the issues of weight and health in young people. Surely this would be a positive thing to do. Perhaps First Lady Michelle Obama could enroll Sidibe in the White House’s current campaign to combat obesity amongst America’s youth.’
