Golden Girl Rue McLanahan Dies

Earlier this year, when Rue McLanahan was ailing, Betty White sent her a satirical note: “I hope you die, so I can be the last Golden Girl.” Well, the career-revived White today got her wish: Rue passed away this morning at 1 a.m. I can’t quite express how sad I am by this passing. Rue’s character Blanche not only paved the way for “Sex and the City”‘s Samantha (“Sex” is pretty much a rip-off of “GG”‘s female quartet) but it was groundbreaking in showing that senior citizens could be both attractive and perpetually horny. I only met McClanahan once: she came to a party I was co-hosting, walked right up to me upon entrance, and said, “Ditch your date and we’ll go have some fun.” Spoken like a true Blanche — and like the true broad she so gloriously was. Pace tua, Rue.
