“Carlos” Director Defends Himself

edgarramirezI’m still thinking about “Carlos,” starring Edgar Ramirez, pictured (Oscar! Oscar!), which unspooled in its long version this week on the Sundance Channel. (Question of the day: Is Ramirez the new Javier Bardem?) The much-shortened version is released in some cinemas today. I found this interview with the movie’s director, Olivier Assayas, to be very illuminating. Some people I know were bothered by what they thought was the film’s unexamined, one-track, Israel bashing. Assayas, a former critic and therefore a little too long-winded in his opinions (!) does a good job of explaining the difference between a single-minded character and a one-dimensional character.
