Jacques d’Amboise: Dancer Anecdote

damboise31JLcO2adDL._SL500_AA300_One of my favorite bits in “I Was A Dancer,” the captivating new memoir of New York City Ballet dancer and overall arts crusader Jacques d’Amboise, comes as he inserts a diary entry of a City Ballet tour of Europe in 1980: “Suzanne [Farrell] got picky on me about a lift in our performance of ‘Movements for Piano and Orchestra,’ ‘the lift should be closer to center.’ I was smiley and easy going, but replied, ‘It’s always been off center.’ She then complained to Balanchine, who was standing nearby. ‘No, dear, it’s off center. But, maybe, if you want, we can move center over — for you.'”
