“Blonde,” “Clybourne” Win Oliviers
Two American-born entities, the musical “Legally Blonde,” starring Sheridan Smith (pictured) and the play “Clybourne Park,” won the top honors at last night’s Olivier awards, London theatre’s answer to the Tonys. The coverage by some of the British media, however, was a bit annoying. For example, the Telegraph focussed on the four awards grabbed by a revival of Rattigan’s “After the Dance,” and didn’t even get around to mentioning the American shows until the tenth paragraph: a case of understandable national pride trumping professional reporting. London is the most vital theatre city in the world: its media don’t need to have such an overcompensatory inferior complex.
