“Jersey Shore” Announces Spinoffs

In the goomba movies of my youth, like “Saturday Night Fever,” the Italian proles dreamed of living in Manhattan: a place where they could imbibe cultcha and dream of banging a girl who didn’t chew gum during intercourse. Now, of course, the ‘burbs and boroughs are where kids would rather stay: the better to get a hit reality show and the predictable line of book deals and lucrative appearances and clothing lines that go with it. I’m talking, most especially these days, of the shows that start or stay in New Jersey: “Real Housewives” and especially “Jersey Shore.” In a further sign of the power of stupidity (Judge Judy says “Beauty fades but dumb is forever,” but dumb can also be profitable), on Thursday MTV greenlit two “Jersey Shore” spinoffs, starring castmates Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Jenni “JWoww” Farley and Paul “DJ Pauly D” Delvecchio. “Jersey Shore,” easily the network’s biggest hit, will now be following in the footsteps of broadcast heavyweights like “CSI” in creating its own TV franchise. Aren’t you glad to be alive?
