“Violent” Common At White House

Jon Stewart did a necessary take-down last night of some right-wing commentators’ criticism of the White House for inviting rapper/actor Common to an event yesterday. The Fox News folks (Hannity et al) damned Common for lyrics they took out of context (remember context?). Stewart pointed out that Hannity has celebrated the violence in the lyrics of performers such as Ted Nugent: hmm, do I detect a double standard? The Fox folks would have more credibility if they went after artists — in hip-hop and elsewhere — who regularly abuse women and gays under the guise of “just reflecting what’s out there.” Common, who did have some homophobic lyrics on his early albums, took a hard look at himself and raised his consciousness on the issue.
