Thatcher Movie Previews At Cannes

Snippets from “The Iron Lady” — you know, the upcoming film for which Meryl Streep, playing Margaret Thatcher, is finally going to win a third Oscar — have been shown at Cannes. The film is told in flashback, with an old and frail Lady Thatcher looking back over her life. (Sounds just like “Titanic”!) Here’s my favorite bit from a summary of the Cannes preview: ‘[Thatcher] is also shown submitting somewhat reluctantly to a makeover at the hands of Gordon Reece, who was tasked with softening her image. In addition to the voice coaching – she was deemed too shrill – she is given fashion advice, not all of which is gratefully received. “The pearls,” she announces imperiously, “are non-negotiable.”’
