Your Weekend: EW Recommends

Movies: The more reviews I read of the ridiculously expensive “Green Lantern” the more convinced I am that it’s not even a worthwhile popcorn flick. Meanwhile, Woody Allen’s “Midnght in Paris” keeps expanding nationwide and proving itself Wood’s biggest hit in a long time. Television: “The Killing” ends this weekend, if you’re still bothering to watch. A new alien-invasion series called “Falling Skies,” produced by Mr. Spielberg, premieres on TNT on Sunday. E.T, phone home and stop them! Books: I’m browsing in David McCullough’s latest, a 19th-century cultural history: “The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris.” I’m more methodically reading Alan Hollinghurst’s new novel, “The Stranger’s Child,” about to be published in the U.K. and due in the U.S. in October. An early review here. Music: Don’t get me started on the latest Moppet With A Big Voice: Jackie Evancho, whose CD is Number One on Amazon. Sports: Now that all the playoffs are over, try a riot-free pastime: baseball. (Went to a Yankees game this week and sat in the GM’s skybox. I could get used to that.) If you need to ease into that afternoon nap, switch on golf’s U.S. Open. Finally: Don’t forget about Missouri River flood relief. It’s a serious situation.
