Your Weekend: LW Recommends

Movies: Looks to me like “Glee: The 3D Movie” is only for diehards. Catch up with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” I highly recommend “The Help.” Give Viola Davis the Oscar! DVD: Stanley Kubrick’s too-little-known heist film, “The Killing,” is new on DVD, and available for immediate download on Netflix. Television: For fans of “24”-style programming, Cinemax introduces a sex-and-violence-filled show, “Strike Back,” on Friday. Music: I’ve been listening to the new Jay-Z/Kanye project, “Watch the Throne.” I’m liking about half of it. The Barbra Streisand/Village Vanguard program on PBS had too many ballads for my taste. But if you like Babs, you can preorder her new CD, “What Matters Most,” which comes out August 23. Books: Philip Levine was just named the U.S. Poet Laureate. Find his books here. Sports: Already Tiger’s blown it at the PGA, but there are so many great new players that I’ll watch the final round. Finally: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all the politicians would just shut up for a week and let us enjoy the end of the summer?
