Marquee Magic In Times Square

It’s a shame that movie marquees in Times Square have gotten so uncreative. (Oh, wait, there are no more movie marquees in Times Square.) Back in the day, they had a little spark. Just look at the marquee above that’s about to be hoisted onto the Loew’s State theatre. Barbara Stanwyck is looking all come-hither. (They’ve obviously padded the bosom, since “Missy” — Miss Stanwyck’s nickname — was fairly flat-chested.) And William Holden looks young, which is reassuring, since he was only 21 at the time of this 1939 picture’s release.
