Brit Actresses Against Plastic Surgery

British actresses have always been less plastic-surgery-prone than their American counterparts. While Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie Smith, and Judi Dench avoid the knife and show off their beautifully earned wrinkles in close-up, Jane Fonda and many others keep going back to the clinic. Younger generations are maintaining the cultural difference. In fact, 35-year-old Kate Winslet has formed the British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League with Rachel Weisz and Emma Thompson. Explains Winslet: ‘[Cosmetic surgery] “goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty. I am an actress. I don’t want to freeze the expression of my face.” We’ll see if Miss Kate is singing the same tune when she’s 60. Meanwhile, her recent ads for Lancome’s L’Absolu Nu lipstick were so airbrushed that they came under criticism. Advances in digital technology will allow movies to smooth out actresses in close-up, too. I’ll bet Kate won’t object.
