Your Weekend: LW Recommends

Movies: Vera Farmiga’s directorial debut, “Higher Ground,” is not about where you should be when the hurricane hits; it’s about religion. I say: Stick with “The Help” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” Television: It’s hard enough being in New York this weekend with that hurricane; I’m not going to add to my stress by watching “Rat Busters NYC,” the latest example of animal-control television. Books: I’m loving Alexandra Fuller’s latest Africa memoir, this one about her parents: “Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness.” And a confession: I curled up at the bookstore the other day with George R. R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones” set. It didn’t suck. Music: Can you believe how Botox-ed Barbra Streisand looks on her new CD cover? Yuk! Lil Wayne’s new CD cover is much more fun. Sports: Definitely watching Giants/Jets on Saturday. Can the Jets’ latest felon survive his sore back? Finally: This weekend’s MTV Video Music Awards can’t be any trashier than last week’s top pop-culture event. Can they?
