Miami: Burgeoning Cultural Capital?
Yes, Miami has Art Basel this time of year, and yes, there are quite a few rich folks around — some South American, others just generally shady. But I don’t think you go from Art Basel and a few new buildings by starchitects to proclaiming the city a cultural capital. Every time I’ve been to the city’s main performing arts center, it’s been half empty. And just try to have an informed conversation with a local about the arts and see how far you get.
