“Bonnie & Clyde”: Four Stars

I’m here to tell you that “Bonnie & Clyde” — a new Broadway musical about the iconic 1930s outlaws — is the most affecting new show I’ve seen in a long while. Laura Osnes and Jeremy Jordan (pictured), are both terrific as the leads: Osnes made a strong impression during the Broadway runs of “South Pacific” and “Anything Goes,” but it’s wonderful to see her originate a character. Jordan, who made an impression in the Papermill production of “Newsies” that’s coming to Broadway in the spring, is also first-rate. I’ll not soon forget the sight and sound of them singing the finale here, “Dyin’ Ain’t So Bad.” The “Bonnie & Clyde” physical production, modest by Broadway standards, is perfectly proportioned for its book. And its secondary characters, especially the one played to twangy perfection by Melissa Van der Schyff, are very fine. The show is one of the best new musicals I’ve seen all year: if you live in New York or are planning to visit, put this one on your list.
