“8” Is Worth Watching, But Brad Pitt…

Dustin Lance Black’s “8,” a mostly court-transcript-based play, was performed this past Saturday at the Wilshire Ebell theatre in L.A. The play, which was done last fall in New York, concerns the court case around Proposition 8, the marriage equality issue, in California. The reading, which begins at the 30-minute mark, is well worth watching. George Clooney, Martin Sheen. Brad Pitt, Jane Lynch, John C. Reilly, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christine Lahti and others costarred. Kudos to the cast. I’m a critic, so I’d stop breathing if I didn’t point something out: Brad Pitt — a magnificent movie star whom I admire for so many reasons — is surprisingly weak as a live performer. It’s a mercy he’s never done Broadway.
